Grants to Fire Departments

The Joseph P. Dibernardo Memorial Foundation provides grants to fire departments in need of personal safety (PSS) systems for their personnel. Funds can also be used for training related to using this equipment.

Public Safety Grant Program

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Grant program provides funds to law enforcement, EMS, public safety organizations, non-profits, and schools for the following:

  • Life-saving equipment - Vehicle extrication tools, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), bunker gear, thermal imaging cameras, automated chest compression systems, vehicle stabilization struts, bulletproof vests, all-terrain vehicles, fire hoses.

  • Prevention education - Fire extinguisher training systems, prevention education materials, programming initiatives to focus on issues such as DUI and distracted driving education, carbon monoxide poisoning, CPR training, accessibility, and other relevant safety issues

Please note that only 600 applications are accepted per quarter.

In case you missed it, FEMA recently released three grant programs to help firefighters. All of them are due June 22, 2026.

Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program

Supports fire departments and other emergency medical services agencies. Funds can be used for personal protective equipment and emergency response vehicles. It can also fund health, wellness, and resiliency initiatives to prepare responders for incidents. 

Funding Amount: Up to $9,000,000 per award ($291,600,000 in total funding)

Match: 5% for jurisdictions serving a population of 20,000 or fewer. 10% for population 20,000 to 1 million residents. 15% for over 1 million residents.

Fire Prevention and Safety Grant Program

Supports fire departments and non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and other research-oriented institutions. Funds can be used for research, clinical studies focused on community fire prevention and firefighter safety, health, and well-being. 

Funding Amount: Up to $1,500,000 ($32,400,000 in total funding)

Match: 5%

Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant Program

Supports fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations. Funds salaries for firefighters, enabling them to stay well-staffed. Funds can also be used to recruit and retain more people in the fire service.
