New Jersey Historical Commission Project Grants

This grant funds projects related to New Jersey History. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Conserving historical materials, such as manuscripts or books

  • Editorial and publication projects

  • Education initiatives

  • Exhibitions

  • Producing media, such as film and radio programming

The goal of this program is to engage diverse audiences in the active exploration, enjoyment, interpretation, understanding, and preservation of New Jersey's history.

Funding Amount: Up to $20,000

NJHC General Operating Support Grants

The "General Operating Support" Grant program helps underwrite the operating expenses of an organization that focuses on New Jersey History. Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to:

  • Salaries and wages

  • Staff training

  • Fundraising and development

  • Insurance

  • Long-term and strategic planning

To be eligible, organizations must have an annual operating budget of at least $100,000 in non-state history funds. 

Funding Amount: Up to 33% of the average of an applicant's total non-state operating income from the last completed fiscal year and the current projected year.

Application Deadline: March 9, 2026 (Letter of Interest); April 13, 2026 (Full Application)

Match: 3:1 (for every grant dollar, awardees must provide three)

Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors

The National Trust for Historic Preservation's "Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors" grants are for planning activities and education efforts focused on the preservation of historic interiors. Grants may be made for activities and projects such as:

  • Hiring architecture, planning, economics, archeology, fundraising, media relations, education, or graphic design consultants 

  • Hiring a preservation architect to create an interior restoration plan and/or develop a conservation plan for an interior's textiles

  • Producing a historic furnishings plan

  • Restoration, rehabilitation, stabilization, and preservation of designated historic interiors, including brick-and-mortar interior construction

If not already, awardees will have to become Organizational Level Preservation Leadership Forum Members, Main Street America Community Members, or Main Street America General Members.

Funding Amount: $2,500-$15,000
